KAVU is an acronym for Klear Above Visibility Unlimited, an aviation terminology that basically means perfect flying conditions. This free and easy Seattle brand came into being in 1993 when it was founded by Barry Barr. Like other smart business ideas, Barry was seeking to solve a problem... whilst spending summer holidays from college in the late ͚80's on fishing boats, Barry kept losing caps to the sea. Inspired by a Teva sandal, he came up with the original Kavu design; the Strap Cap was born, a cap with a sturdy webbing around the circumference keeping it in place in even the worst of gales. Now producing a line of clothing and accessories all from Kavu's slightly wonky and idiosyncratic perspective, Barry's eureka moment has turned into a full scale business.
